The FGB G455A test looks at a common variation in the beta-fibrinogen gene. Fibrinogen is a clotting protein, and this variation has been studied for its link with fibrinogen levels in the blood. It is usually requested as part of a cardiovascular or clotting gene profile.

What the test looks for

Fibrinogen is made from three chains, one of which comes from the FGB (beta-fibrinogen) gene. At position −455 in the gene’s promoter, people carry either a G or an A. Each person has two copies, so the result is GG, GA or AA. Studies have linked the A version with somewhat higher fibrinogen levels. Its usefulness for predicting clots or heart disease in an individual person is limited and still debated.
