What it measures
- F13A1 (factor XIII A subunit) V34L polymorphism
The F13A1 V34L test looks at a common variation in the gene for factor XIII, the protein that strengthens and stabilises a blood clot in the last step of clotting. It is usually requested as part of a wider clotting gene profile.
What the test looks for
Factor XIII links the strands of a clot together so it holds firm. The F13A1 gene makes its A subunit. A common variation at position 34 changes the amino acid valine (V) to leucine (L). The leucine version makes factor XIII activate more quickly, and researchers have studied how this affects clot structure and clotting risk. On its own, the variation does not diagnose a condition.
Each person has two copies of the gene, so the result is VV, VL or LL.
Who might consider it
- People having a broader thrombophilia or clotting gene profile at their doctor’s request
- People whose doctor wants to look at it alongside tests such as Factor V Leiden and the PAI-1 4G/5G test
This genetic test is different from a factor XIII activity test, which measures how well factor XIII is working in your blood.
Before you book
The test uses one blood sample. Our team can collect it at your home or office anywhere in Dubai, or you can visit our lab in Al Karama or Al Barsha 1. The lab asks for a signed consent form and your relevant medical history with the sample, as it does for all genetic tests. Results are usually ready in 10–14 days.
Understanding your results
The report gives your genotype: VV, VL or LL. It describes a common variation, not a disease, and should not be used alone to make decisions about treatment. Your doctor interprets it together with your history and your other clotting results.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the F13A1 V34L test cost in Dubai?
AED 1,520, VAT included. Home collection costs AED 150 per visit; there is no extra fee when you visit our lab in Al Karama or Al Barsha 1.
What does the F13A1 V34L result mean?
It shows which versions of a common variation in the factor XIII gene you carry: VV, VL or LL. Your doctor interprets it with your other clotting results.
Is this the same as a factor XIII activity test?
No. An activity test measures how well factor XIII works in your blood. This test looks at a variation in the gene.
What sample is needed and how long do results take?
One blood sample. Results are usually ready in 10–14 days.
